Три богатыря – Илья Муромец, Добрыня Никитич, Алеша Попович – и говорящий конь Юлий осматривают границу Киевского княжества. Илья говорит, что у его жены Аленушки скоро день рождения, а он не знает, что ей подарить. Богатыри начинают обсуждать, как можно угодить женам. Юлий обвиняет их в мещанстве. Неожиданно в пограничный столб вонзается стрела. По другую сторону границы несется повозка султана Рашида. Ее преследуют ассасины, нанятые братом Рашида – Арханом. Алеша предлагает помочь попавшему в беду восточному соседу. Юлий утверждает, что это противоречит принципам международной политики. Одного ассасина заносит на повороте, он падает с верблюда. Одна его нога оказывается за пределами границы. Илья говорит, что это можно расценивать как вторжение. Богатыри устремляются на помощь Рашиду, обезвреживают всех ассасинов. Наблюдавший за расправой в подзорную трубу Архан велит своему слуге, здоровяку Маге, сделать что-нибудь. Мага выходит из укрытия, встает на пути богатырей и подпрыгивает. От мощного сотрясения земли богатыри падают с коней. Они не могут прийти в себя. К ним подъезжает султан Рашид, он благодарит своих спасителей, спрашивает, не было ли среди разбойников коротышки с бородой и здоровяка в два человеческих роста. Богатыри утверждают, что не видели таких. Юлий интересуется, какие сокровища везет султан. Выясняется, что в повозке находится неземной красоты кобыла. Юлий ею очарован. Он просит Рашида руки, то есть копыта, прекрасной незнакомки. Султан сообщает, что это королевская кобыла Звезда Востока, поэтому сватом у Юлия может выступать только особа королевских кровей. На прощание Рашид говорит богатырям: будете в наших краях – заезжайте, султан Рашид своих долгов не забывает. Юлию приходит идея попросить помощи у Князя Киевского. Он несется в столицу.

У Князя Киевского серьезные проблемы, иноземные кредиторы требуют оплаты счетов, срок по которым давно вышел. Но казна сейчас пуста, отдавать долги нечем. Князь поручает боярину Антипке выдать себя за правителя Киевского княжества и «заговорить» иноземных послов, потянуть время. Антипка в княжеском облачении выходит в тронный зал. Он усаживает возмущенных кредиторов за стол, начинает потчевать чаем из самовара, рассказывать анекдоты.

В княжеские покои врывается Юлий. Конь просит Князя сосватать для него Звезду Востока. Тот ему отказывает, поскольку занят более важными делами.

Юлий жалуется на свои проблемы ослику Моисею. Вместе они решают насильно заставить Князя стать сватом.

Под покровом ночи говорящий конь и ослик пробираются во дворец и похищают спящего Князя, спеленав его, как младенца.

Утром Антипка обнаруживает пропажу Князя.

Аленушка, Настасья Филипповна и Любава озабочены тем, что их мужья не останавливаясь пилят дрова. А Илья, Добрыня и Алеша просто не могут смириться с тем, что их кто-то одолел. Это задело их богатырскую честь. К богатырям прилетает голубь с письмом от Антипки, боярин сообщает, что пропал Князь.

Богатыри прибывают в Киев. По следам, оставленным злоумышленниками, они определяют, что Князя выкрал Юлий.

Юлий и Моисей с плененным Князем приближаются к границе. Князю на выручку мчатся богатыри. Юлий и Моисей уходят от погони, спалив мост через пропасть. Богатыри едва не погибают.

Антипка продолжает угощать иноземных послов чаем, рассказывает им байки.

Ночью Юлий не может уснуть, его мучает совесть. Юлий освобождает Князя. Тот намеревается вернуться в Киев. Юлий его останавливает: моста нет, а в обход до границы верст двести будет. Конь просит прощения у Князя, рассказывает о своей любви, из-за которой он и совершил это предательство. Юлий умоляет Князя о помощи. Тот соглашается нанести визит султану Рашиду.

Утром Юлий, Князь и Моисей отправляются в путь. Они преодолевают крутые скалы, бредут по раскаленной пустыне, изнывая от палящего солнца. Им мерещится оазис с зелеными березками. Путники устремляются к нему и попадают в заросли кактусов. Юлию приходится вынимать иголки из тела Князя. Путников окружает стая грифов падальщиков, дожидающихся их гибели. Приближается песчаная буря.

Богатыри идут в обход. Илья говорит, что сначала им нужно освободить Князя, а потом отыскать того здоровяка, который их всех победил. Добрыня считает, что их богатырская честь была задета при этом трижды.

Юлий и Князь приходят в себя. Они по шею засыпаны песком, в небе над ними кружат грифы. Рядом на верхушке песчаного холмика лежит череп. Юлий начинает оплакивать своего друга ослика. Князь говорит, что это коровий череп, поскольку он с рогами. Моисею удается первым выбраться из песка. Он приносит змею. Перепуганные Юлий и Князь тоже выбираются из песчаной западни. Путники видят на горизонте восточный город.

Илья размышляет, какую хитрость применил их более удачливый соперник. Но никто из богатырей не может этого вспомнить.

Во дворце Рашид беседует с падишахом. Тот готов отдать за Звезду Востока огромный сапфир. Но сначала падишах хочет насладиться гонкой. Рашид уверяет, что на скачках его кобыле нет равных. Слуга докладывает Рашиду, что к нему прибыл Князь Киевский. Султан даже не знает, где находятся владения его гостя. Но слуга ему рассказывает: я был там, у них медведи играют на балалайках, а волки пляшут и едят бабушек. Жуть! Рашид соглашается принять визитера. Князь начинает церемонию традиционного русского сватовства, потом замечает сапфир, спрашивает: это приданое? Падишах говорит, что это приз за победу в великих королевских скачках. Князь загорается идеей заполучить сапфир, чтобы расплатиться со всеми кредиторами. Он заявляет, что тоже будет участвовать в скачках.

Князь говорит Юлию, что Рашид согласен на свадьбу. Но сначала они должны поучаствовать в скачках. Это местная традиция, жениху нужно победить невесту. Князь велит Юлию договориться со своей избранницей, чтобы та ему проиграла.

Ночью Юлий пробирается в тщательно охраняемый шатер, где содержат Звезду Востока. Юлий предлагает прекрасной кобыле проиграть на скачках, чтобы их свадьба состоялась. Но получив в ответ удар копытом по морде, Юлий вылетает из шатра. Его хватают стражники.

Утром Князь и Моисей видят на площади толпу народа. Выясняется, что люди собрались посмотреть на казнь. Палач готовится отрубить Юлию голову. В город въезжают русские богатыри. Они вступают в схватку со стражниками и палачом, обезвреживают их. Потом богатыри обращаются к султану Рашиду, напоминают, что тот приглашал их в гости и обещал исполнить любую их просьбу. К султану подбегает Князь, просит пощадить коня, с которым он будет участвовать в скачках. Рашид вынужден выполнить свое обещание.

В Киеве Антипка по-прежнему развлекает иноземцев, предлагает участникам чаепития сдвинуть столы кругом для лучшего взаимопонимания.

Юлий просит прощения у богатырей, говорит, что был ослеплен любовью. После этого они с Князем отправляются выбирать колесницу. Богатырям Князь говорит, что им предоставлено свободное время. Те отправляются на базар, присматривают подарки для жен. Илья замечает возвышающуюся надо всеми фигуру, узнает их обидчика. Но пока богатыри пробираются сквозь толпу, Мага успевает скрыться. Глашатаи кричат о предстоящих скачках. Богатырям становится известно, что в них участвуют и Юлий с Князем.

Увидев своих соперников, Юлий приходит к выводу, что у него нет шансов на победу. Но Князь призывает его не сдаваться. Князь выбирает для соревнований детскую колесницу. На складе инвентаря появляются богатыри, они просят у Князя объяснений. Тот говорит, что намерен победить на скачках, получив в качестве приза сапфир и кобылу. Князь также признается, что у них с Моисеем имеется кое-какой план.

В больших королевских скачках с препятствиями участвуют чемпионы разных государств. Победитель первого заезда будет состязаться с султаном Рашидом и его любимой кобылой – Звездой Востока. Приз победителю – голубой сапфир. На трибунах за Юлия и Князя болеют богатыри. Пока Илья и Добрыня увлечены наблюдением за скачками, Алеша видит в бинокль Магу и Архана, идет к ним. Юлий и Князь безнадежно отстают от китайского, арабского и египетского участников. Позади них неспешно продвигаются только медитирующие на ходу чемпионы Индии. По сигналу Князя Моисей выбрасывает на дорожку арбузы, чтобы задержать соперников. Их колесницы сталкиваются. Юлий вырывается вперед.

Мага и Архан проникают в шатер Звезды Востока. Архан уводит свою кобылу, которая рада воссоединиться с настоящим хозяином. Но путь им преграждает Алеша, который уверен, что перед ним воры. Мага выполняет свой излюбленный прием. Он подпрыгивает, земля сотрясается. На ипподроме рушится минарет комментатора. Обломки заваливают дорожку перед финишной прямой. Представители Индии догоняют русских. Юлий по перилам ограждения огибает последнее препятствие, мчится к финишу, но, отвлекшись на разговоры с Князем, врезается головой в столб и теряет сознание. Князь тащит коня на своих плечах. Им удается пересечь финишную черту первыми.

Илья и Добрыня обнаруживают, что Алеша куда-то подевался.

Падишах велит Рашиду выводить на старт финального заезда свою кобылу. Выясняется, что Звезду Востока украли. Падишах сердится, он считает, что султан специально это подстроил. Публика требует, чтобы победителю вручили награду. Падишах назло Рашиду отдает сапфир Князю Киевскому.

Юлий упрекает Князя в том, что ему безразличны его чувства к прекрасной кобыле. В этот момент их окружают стражники Рашида, пытаются отнять у Князя сапфир. Князь и Юлий спасаются бегством. Им удается оторваться от погони. Юлий собирается искать свою возлюбленную по запаху. Но тут они видят, что Звезду Востока куда-то ведут бородатый коротышка и здоровяк. Князь и Юлий устремляются за ними.

Илья, Добрыня и Моисей находят Алешу. Тот рассказывает, что разгадал трюк здоровяка, показывает направление, куда побежали похитители прекрасной кобылы.

Князь и Юлий стучат в дом Архана, требуют отдать кобылу. Мага по приказу хозяина хватает своей огромной ручищей Князя и затаскивает его в дом. Прибегают богатыри и ослик. Юлий сообщает, что Князь попал в плен. Конь предлагает начать переговоры. Из дома выходит Мага. Он угрожающе смотрит на богатырей, а потом подпрыгивает. Земля сотрясается. Когда пыль рассеивается, Мага с удивлением обнаруживает что его противники устояли на ногах. Он повторяет свой прием. Почти одновременно с ним подпрыгивают и богатыри, оставаясь в воздухе в момент удара соперника о землю, им удается сохранить равновесие, а с ног валится уже Мага.

Архан угощает Князя кофе, рассказывает о своем жадном и хитром брате. Рашид с детства отбирал у Архана все игрушки, а потом забрал и Звезду Востока. Он разлучил Звездочку с ее суженым, красавцем Садиком. Князь выглядывает в окно, видит богатырей. Алеша продолжает бороться с Магой. Илья и Добрыня говорят товарищу, что их богатырская честь уже восстановлена. Алеша не унимается: он нас трижды опозорил. Рашид велит слуге проводить гостей в дом. Богатыри понимают, что Князя никто в плен не брал. Во двор выходит старенькая мама Маги, называет его несносным мальчишкой, тихонько шлепает пучком душистых трав, уводит присмиревшего сына и Алешу в дом, приглашает пройти на кухню и остальных гостей. Там Мага и Алеша съедают разломленную пополам лепешку. Илья говорит, что по восточной традиции поделившие между собой хлеб враги становятся друзьями.

Юлий требует, чтобы Рашид показал ему Звездочку. Хозяин ведет гостей в сад. Там пасется влюбленная пара – Звезда Востока и Садик. Оскорбленный Юлий вызывает своего более удачливого соперника на дуэль. Звездочка бросает перед конями платок, препятствуя поединку. Садик тут же успокаивается, но Юлий все равно наносит ему удар, за что снова получает от Звезды Востока копытом по морде и теряет сознание.

Антипке удалось уговорить иноземцев вступить в созданное им братство. Он призывает забыть прошлые обиды, начать доверять друг другу. Иноземцы рвут неоплаченные Князем закладные. Антипка предлагает делать взносы в фонд братства.

Князь в сопровождении богатырей возвращается во дворец, сгоняет со своего трона Антипку, велит боярину позвать кредиторов. Князь намерен с ними расплатиться сапфиром. Антипка показывает сундук с золотом, рассказывает о братстве, которое он организовал. Князь доволен, он обещает наградить Антипку орденом.

Богатыри и ослик садятся пить чай. Юлий, очнувшись, не может вспомнить, зачем он пришел во дворец. Князь говорит, что они все вместе собирались на рыбалку.

Horse Julius and Big Horse Racing (Russian: Конь Юлий и большие скачки, romanized: Kon’ Juliy i Bol’shie Skachki, lit. ‘«The Horse Julius and the Great Races‘) is a 2020 animated Russian folklore spin-off film written by Vadim Sveshnikov, Maxim Sveshnikov, Alexsandr Boyarskiy and directed by Darina Schmidt and Konstantin Feoktistov. The writers and producers of The Three Bogatyrs resumed production in the tenth film of the Russian animated saga. Veteran producers for the series as well as CTB Film Company, Sergey Selyanov and Alexander Boyarsky resumed production for the film. Horse Julius and Big Horse Racing is the sequel to Three Heroes and The Heiress to the Throne (2018) and is dedicated to the feats of the character Bogatyr horse Julius.

Alyosha Popvich and his horse Julius have been folk heroes ever since they have defended Kievan Rus from attacks of villains. Julius always accompanied the hero as they found themselves in the very center of dangerous events. Prince Vladimir himself proclaimed Julius as the court horse. Julius asks to be married to the royal mare of the East — Zvezda. It is up to Julius to win a race to prove his status for marriage.

Melnitsa Animation Studio from St.Petersburg was the animation production studio in charge of design for the film. The studio uses traditional animation for the series known internationally as The Three Heroes. The road trip comedy was released in Russia on 31 December 2020 by the distribution company Sony Pictures under the Columbia Pictures label.

Plot[edit]

At the borders of the Kiev Principality, three heroes and the horse Julius save Sultan Rashid from the robbers of his brother Arkan. Arkan tried to take away from his brother a Mare he bought at auction named Zvezda. Julius, the royal horse for the bogatyrs asks for the hand, that is, the hooves of the Royal princess Mare Zvezda of the East from Sultan Rashid. However, Julius cannot boast of his own pedigree, and according to the rules of royal marriages, only a candidate of equal status can marry a person of such bloodlines.

Suddenly, Julius comes up with the idea of asking the Prince of Kiev to become his matchmaker. Julius rushes to Kiev, but the Prince is engaged in other matters. Julius turns to the Prince of Kiev for help, but is refused. However, Julius does not to give up. Under the cover of the night when everyone is sleeping, Julius sneaks into the castle. He kidnaps the Prince and forcibly takes him to the Sultan for matchmaking. Meanwhile the bogatyrs also have business on the East side. Everyone will meet at the big races, where the winner will get everything.

In November 2018, announcement was made of the new installment to the series titled Horse Julius and Big Horse Racing.^[1][2] The creators of the series intended to present a feature film on one of the series’ most beloved characters, horse Julius.^[3] The horse has been depicted as a sarcastic but faithful bay horse with a red mane. The character’s Homeric punch lines are famous throughout the series. Julius’ catchphrase «Don’t make my horseshoes laugh…» was part of a contest at the radio station Humor FM (Юмор FM).^[4] In 2018, Smotrim collected the top ten jokes of Horse Julius.^[5] Horse Julius formerly known as Gaius Julius Caesar, is developed as a paradox character who is a bibliophile at the library but at the same time acts in a confused or ineffectual way.^[6]

The script written by the Sveshnikovs and Alexander Boyarsky developed the characteristic of Julius and in general the comedy of the series into a spin-off type film.^[7][8] The theme of developing one’s innate abilities and talents is described in the film through the bumbling character Julius who despite flaws can manage to find friends and allies while at the same time execute ambitious plans as seen in the finale international horse race competition.^[6]

The film is the tenth cartoon in the cycle of The Three Heroes based on Russian culture and history. The film series depicts the titular bogatyr knights in animated format.^[9] Darina Schmidt, who was previously worked for such films as Luntik and Smeshariki became the director of the film.^[10] Konstantin Feoktistov who has previously worked for the film Three Heroes and the Princess of Egypt also was director, with the film becoming his fifth production for the franchise.^[4]

In March 2018, Sergey Selyanov presented the film to the Cinema Foundation.^[11][12] Leading up to the holiday season of 2020, cinema chains KARO and Kinomax allied in a strategic joint advertising merger that will bolster the Russian film industry. As the most dynamic and number one cinema market in Europe in terms of attendance in 2020, despite the difficulties of COVID-19, the Russian film industry will see a host of films as it enters the fourth quarter including Horse Julius and Big Horse Racing.^[13] The film as part of the New Year releases heralded a new record in Russian film industry. The share of Russian cinema reached 50% compared to the share in 2019.^[14] The film was designated as a national film approved for distribution in the fourth quarter of 2020.^[15] Sony Pictures signed a production pact with Sergey Selyanov’s CTB Film Company. The partnership is intended to benefit both companies as Sony Pictures will be able to branch out its portfolio while CTB Film Company will be able to increase its presence in the national film market. The association’s first set of films to be released by the end of the year are animated films Barkers: Mind the Cats! and Horse Julius and Big Horse Racing.^[16]

Film producer Alexander Boyarsky, states the film is «A fun, good New Year’s picture, a funny character, we love him, we hope that the audience also loves him. And the story of his matchmaking formed the basis of the film, around it, in general, everything revolves around the idea.»^[17] The film is catered to the family audience with emphasis on a festive mood.^[6] The film was one of the anticipated releases of the New Year.^[18] Voice actor Sergey Burunov states, «This is the first sultan in my life. He’s kind, he’s cunning, he’s rich, he’s smart. It wasn’t me. In the story, our horse Julius fell in love. This time it is serious. He asks for the hooves of the royal mare Star of the East from Sultan Rashid, that is, from me. The love of the horse is strong, but whether the sultan will give up his main treasure is a big question.»^[6]

Critical response[edit]

Intermedia noted «Horse Julius and Big Horse Racing is a spin-off of the mega-popular animated series about Three Heroes, which has not lost ground for 16 years.» The film was «shot with a fair amount of humor, ingenuity and excitement.»^[19] Kino Mail stated, the style of the film is still the same: «The film will be of interest primarily to loyal fans of the franchise — as before, it is a comedy adventure film for young children and family viewing with them. Stylistically, it has not changed in any way, and fans of the series will be pleased with all the same bright colors, cartoon images of heroes, dynamic editing and cheerful music.»^[20]

Kinoafisha stated the eponymous horse Julius, «first appeared on screens in 2004, the character waited 16 years to get a solo album.» The review stated, the film can be watched separately from the series because it is a spin-off movie and is the «story is more for big fans of the franchise about the Three Heroes.»^[21] The film became one of the top twenty most watched film in KinoPoisk HD film service in February 2021.^[22]

The film is part of the Three Heroes franchise that has spanned the decades since the historic 2004 release Alyosha Popovich and Tugarin the Snake. The animated series has become a behemoth in Russian animation industry that has won many prestigious international awards in the field of animation. These include a special jury prize at the Seoul festival, two prizes for best animation at the JUNIO film festival in Italy, and an award for best artistic achievement at the international children’s and youth film festival in Iran. The Three Bogatryrs series is a recognized brand in the CIS countries such as Belarus and Ukraine.^[4] The series has the most audience in Russia.^[24]

The script written by the Sveshnikovs and Alexander Boyarsky developed the characteristic of Julius and in general the comedy of the series into a spin-off type film.^[7][8] The theme of developing one’s innate abilities and talents is described in the film through the bumbling character Julius who despite flaws can manage to find friends and allies while at the same time execute ambitious plans as seen in the finale international horse race competition.^[6]

The film is the tenth cartoon in the cycle of The Three Heroes based on Russian culture and history. The film series depicts the titular bogatyr knights in animated format.^[9] Darina Schmidt, who was previously worked for such films as Luntik and Smeshariki became the director of the film.^[10] Konstantin Feoktistov who has previously worked for the film Three Heroes and the Princess of Egypt also was director, with the film becoming his fifth production for the franchise.^[4]

In March 2018, Sergey Selyanov presented the film to the Cinema Foundation.^[11][12] Leading up to the holiday season of 2020, cinema chains KARO and Kinomax allied in a strategic joint advertising merger that will bolster the Russian film industry. As the most dynamic and number one cinema market in Europe in terms of attendance in 2020, despite the difficulties of COVID-19, the Russian film industry will see a host of films as it enters the fourth quarter including Horse Julius and Big Horse Racing.^[13] The film as part of the New Year releases heralded a new record in Russian film industry. The share of Russian cinema reached 50% compared to the share in 2019.^[14] The film was designated as a national film approved for distribution in the fourth quarter of 2020.^[15] Sony Pictures signed a production pact with Sergey Selyanov’s CTB Film Company. The partnership is intended to benefit both companies as Sony Pictures will be able to branch out its portfolio while CTB Film Company will be able to increase its presence in the national film market. The association’s first set of films to be released by the end of the year are animated films Barkers: Mind the Cats! and Horse Julius and Big Horse Racing.^[16]

Film producer Alexander Boyarsky, states the film is «A fun, good New Year’s picture, a funny character, we love him, we hope that the audience also loves him. And the story of his matchmaking formed the basis of the film, around it, in general, everything revolves around the idea.»^[17] The film is catered to the family audience with emphasis on a festive mood.^[6] The film was one of the anticipated releases of the New Year.^[18] Voice actor Sergey Burunov states, «This is the first sultan in my life. He’s kind, he’s cunning, he’s rich, he’s smart. It wasn’t me. In the story, our horse Julius fell in love. This time it is serious. He asks for the hooves of the royal mare Star of the East from Sultan Rashid, that is, from me. The love of the horse is strong, but whether the sultan will give up his main treasure is a big question.»^[6]

Intermedia noted «Horse Julius and Big Horse Racing is a spin-off of the mega-popular animated series about Three Heroes, which has not lost ground for 16 years.» The film was «shot with a fair amount of humor, ingenuity and excitement.»^[19] Kino Mail stated, the style of the film is still the same: «The film will be of interest primarily to loyal fans of the franchise — as before, it is a comedy adventure film for young children and family viewing with them. Stylistically, it has not changed in any way, and fans of the series will be pleased with all the same bright colors, cartoon images of heroes, dynamic editing and cheerful music.»^[20]

Kinoafisha stated the eponymous horse Julius, «first appeared on screens in 2004, the character waited 16 years to get a solo album.» The review stated, the film can be watched separately from the series because it is a spin-off movie and is the «story is more for big fans of the franchise about the Three Heroes.»^[21] The film became one of the top twenty most watched film in KinoPoisk HD film service in February 2021.^[22]

The film is part of the Three Heroes franchise that has spanned the decades since the historic 2004 release Alyosha Popovich and Tugarin the Snake. The animated series has become a behemoth in Russian animation industry that has won many prestigious international awards in the field of animation. These include a special jury prize at the Seoul festival, two prizes for best animation at the JUNIO film festival in Italy, and an award for best artistic achievement at the international children’s and youth film festival in Iran. The Three Bogatryrs series is a recognized brand in the CIS countries such as Belarus and Ukraine.^[4] The series has the most audience in Russia.^[24]
